Google To Spend $1B On New West Village Campus

Porat said that the company's most recent investments give it the ability to more than double the number of Google employees in NY over the next 10 years. The move could allow the company to more than double the current 7,000 people it employs in the city over the next decade.

The move is the latest high-profile expansion from a US tech giant, following big investments from Apple and Amazon to create new office spaces in New York, Washington, D.C., and Texas.

Google today is announcing plans to invest over $1 billion in capital improvements to create a new 1.7-million-square-foot campus in Lower Manhattan, dubbed "Google Hudson Square". That spot is less than 2 miles north of the planned Hudson campus. "In fact, we're growing faster outside the Bay Area than within it", said Ruth Porat, the chief financial officer of Alphabet and Google.

Tech giant Google plans to spend more than $1 billion to expand operations in New York City's Hudson Square neighborhood. That's in addition to its plans for new sites in Seattle, San Diego and Culver City. Google purchased that building for $1.9 billion in 2012. As we reported last week, Amazon is planning on building a headquarters in New York City as well.

Google hopes to bring some holiday cheer by making it easier to directly donate to various organizations through the Play Store.

Bottom line: NY is better off relying on its natural advantages to attract employers, and should quit offering special deals in the name of jobs.

Mountain View, California-based Google's move to invest in prime real estate on the Lower West Side of Manhattan also underscores the growing importance of NY as a hub for innovation and an incubator for technology companies.

The news follows Seattle-based Amazon's announcement a month ago that it would set up new headquarters in New York's Long Island City neighbourhood and in Arlington, Virginia, creating upwards of 25,000 jobs in each location. "These are fantastic cities that attract a lot of great talent".

The new campus has been made possible by signing lease agreements for 315 and 345 Hudson Street as well as a signed letter of intent for 550 Washington Street.
