Salah and Van Dijk seal Christmas top spot for Liverpool

Liverpool's 2-0 win at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday sees them move four points clear of reigning champions Manchester City, who host Crystal Palace on Saturday.

It was Liverpool manager Bill Shankly who claimed that "form is temporary and class is permanent", but it is a statement that could have been dreamed up by Jurgen Klopp to describe Mohamed Salah. 'But there are other teams.

"Forty-eight points before Christmas, it's just insane, but there are other teams there as well", said the Liverpool manager, whose side's lead will be cut back to one if Manchester City win at home against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

"If you want to do the headline "Klopp says you need 105 points to become champion" then do it, but we don't think about it".

Tottenham, in third place, has 39 points ahead of this weekend's clash with Everton, while fourth-placed Chelsea has 37 before its home clash with Leicester City. The other two, in 2008 and 2013, were Liverpool.

Salah drifted a ball into the box towards Van Dijk and the towering Dutch defender calmly slotted past Rui Patricio from close range for his first Premier League goal.

With Liverpool looking so solid at the back - this was its 11th clean sheet so far - and increasingly lethal going forward, questions will be asked if Klopp's team can go through the campaign undefeated to match Arsenal's feat in the 2003-04 season.

The opening goal came from a free-kick, with Salah finishing in the middle after the ball had been played down the right for Fabinho.

Wolves nearly produced an immediate response to drag themselves back into the game when a mini-goalmouth scramble ended with the ball falling to Saiss, but his snapshot was straight at Alisson.

By his standards, the 26-year-old did make a slow start to the season and the shoulder injury, which severely hampered his World Cup with Egypt, was serious enough to require time for him to make a full recovery.

Last season, Salah scored 32 league goals and registered 10 assists but by this stage of last term, he had scored 14 goals, meaning he's not too far behind his rate of progress 12 months ago.

In the first half at a wet, windy Molineux they showed signs that some of the swagger that marked them out as the league's great entertainers last season is returning.

In midfield, Klopp selects Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita and Fabinho in midfield.
