Investigations Started on CenturyLink Outage, 911 Failures 28 December 2018

CenturyLink reported the disruption Thursday morning and later identified a "network element that was impacting customer services". Some systems still aren't fully running, and emergency officials are advising people to call alternate numbers if they can't get through. "We are seeing good progress, but our service restoration work is not complete", read a tweet from the Louisiana-based telecommunications company. NBC reports that one Boston man tried to call 911 with a cellphone to report a house fire on Friday, but was not able to do so due to the outage, according to a Boston fire spokesman.

But Friday, CenturyLink customers in Washington state and MA noted that the outages led to sporadic outages for 911 calls.

Some ATM machines weren't working in Idaho and Montana.

Jessica Rosenworcel, a member of the Federal Communications Commission, said via Twitter her agency needed to investigate.

If you can not locate your police station's emergency phone number, call the State 911 Department at 508-872-2508, tell the dispatcher the exact location of the emergency and the dispatcher will transfer you to the correct police department.

CenturyLink and some of its users report outages with the company's internet and phone services are continuing Friday, but 911 services have been restored in areas where CenturyLink is the 911 provider.

"We apologize for the inconvenience w/ multiple alerts", CRESA tweeted.

The Massachusetts State Police posted online Friday morning that the outage was resolved and services were up and running again. "The CenturyLink service outage is therefore completely unacceptable, and its breadth and duration are particularly troubling".

Brian Fontes, CEO of the National Emergency Numbers Association says that while small, localized 911 outages are fairly common and quickly repaired, outages affecting a large enough population to prompt an FCC investigation are not.
