Ellen DeGeneres criticized for defending Kevin Hart

2018 brought more conflict to the already controversial Oscars when host Kevin Hart stepped down after refusing to apologize for homophobic jokes made in the past, including one about hurting his son if he found his son playing with a doll house. "I have no idea if he wants to come back and host but what are your thoughts?'" DeGeneres said. "This is stuff I've addressed, I've talked about this", he says. And two, maybe Ellen will give Hart a new way of looking at the backlash.

But Nick Levine, a United Kingdom journalist who writes about pop culture and LGBTQ issues, told the BBC: "Like Ellen DeGeneres, I believe in forgiveness and second chances, but I also believe those things need to be earned. This was to damage the lives that have been invested in me".

In a 2015 interview with Rolling Stone, Hart was asked about that joke, which he described as being about his own insecurities, adding that "I wouldn't tell that joke today, because when I said it, the times weren't as sensitive as they are now. Because that was wrong".

"LGBT people who love the Oscars were legitimately startled to see just how harsh his words were", Vary said.

"And I believe in Ellen", another social media user tweeted. "And I believe in Kevin Hart".

On Friday, Vary - who has repeatedly criticized Hart since - went on a Twitter tirade, taking offense that DeGeneres would tell Hart to defend himself against "haters".

Will the Academy hire Hart back for the job?

Ellen DeGeneres' attempt to clear comedian Kevin Hart's name and reinstate him as Oscars host did not go over well with critics online.

Hart made the comments in old tweets.

Hart didn't make any promises to accept the job, but did promise to reconsider the offer. I'm sorry! But either my apology is accepted or it isn't. "You are apologizing again right now".

DeGeneres described going to dinner with Hart after she hosted the 2014 Oscars, when he expressed his desire to get the gig. DeGeneres also voices her support for Hart and reveals that she called the Academy to try to get him reinstated as host.

He maintained that tone Thursday when Ellen DeGeneres informed him that she'd been working behind the scenes to get him onstage as host. So I was going to leave it alone. Either I can move forward or I can't, but you can't grow as a person without mistakes.

As of now, the Academy has not selected a replacement host. This is what I want people to understand: "That's an attack to end me". Maybe. But his attitude in response to his own hurtful words kind of spoiled the whole shebang, and even though he apologizes in this Ellen interview, he still seems indignant about the entire ordeal.
