Djokovic battles through to Qatar Open semi-finals

Bautista Agut, meanwhile, who clinched his second victory over Djokovic in nine matches, said: 'I will remember this match for [the rest] of my life.

"I think he's the favourite, regardless of what happened in Doha, the guy had a super, super strong last five, six months of the year", said Federer. Bautista Agut romped through the Swiss in straight sets 6-4 6-4.

"I work very hard to play tennis like this. I can still get to one or two levels up, but I thought under the circumstances I managed to find a way to win against a player that is hitting the ball very fast and just being very aggressive", he added.

Another day, another struggle for Novak Djokovic.

" But I can not be more happy than I am now". "That's it", Djokovic said in his post-match press conference.

The Serb cruised through the opening set before Bautista Agut dragged the contest into a decider by edging the tiebreak in the second set.

Djokovic crashed out and failed in his quest of winning the event a third time, losing 3-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 to the Spaniard.

Later on Thursday, Djokovic spent another 65 minutes on court alongside his brother Marko in a doubles match that they lost in a deciding tie-break to David Goffin and Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Novak was up and it was tough. "I had to play a lot of lines and serve well".

"He's definitely one of the greatest hitters in the game and I wish him all the best for the rest of the season".

The set saw some astonishing tennis from both the players, the drop shots, down the line shots, volleys and a few long rallies all which kept the full house entertained.

However, Djokovic's fortunes changed in the second set when he broke the Georgian in the fifth game and slowly took control of the match.

On serve there was little the Spaniard could do to unsettle his opponent, Bautista Agut only managing to take six points off Djokovic as the Serbian sealed the set easily.
