Unions say TSA workers can't afford to man checkpoints without a paycheck

Hundreds of TSA officers - who have been required to work without pay since the shutdown began December 22 - have called out sick in recent days, according to national reports.

"Great Tweet today by Tyler Q. Houlton @SpoxDHS on the #FakeNews being put out by @CNN, a proud member of the Opposition Party".

The American Federation of Government Employees is suing to force the federal government to pay them during the shutdown.

"This will definitely affect the flying public who we (are) sworn to protect", Hydrick Thomas, president of the national TSA employee union, says in the report.

The TSA said in a statement Friday that call outs that began over the holiday period have increased.

CNN said the mass call outs could lead to less secure air travel as the shutdown continues into its second week with no clear end in sight.

On Friday, TSA said in a statement that the call outs began over the holiday period and have increased.

The TSA then issued a statement cautioning that while wait times "may be affected", they now "remain well within TSA standards" and "security effectiveness will not be compromised" - not necessarily a reassuring statement, given the TSA's "standards" for both wait times and security. Security effectiveness will not be compromised and performance standards will not change.

President Donald Trump went weighed in on the situation, siding against the news outlet, which the president condemns on a frequent basis.

"I don't care that most of the workers not getting paid are democrats, I want to stop the shutdown as soon as we are in agreement on strong border security!" The spokesperson said 99.8% of 2.2 million passengers screened on January 3 waited less than 30 minutes.

People working at the airport tell 7 Action News off camera they have not seen or heard of any call offs from TSA because of the government shutdown at Detroit Metro Airport.

In North Carolina, Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham's airports are seeing call-outs jump by 10 percent, local union president Mac Johnson told the news network.

Union officials stress that the absences are not part of an organized action, but believe the number of people calling out will likely increase.

'This staffing crisis is negatively affecting the National Airspace System, and the shutdown nearly certainly will make a bad situation worse, ' National Air Traffic Controllers Association President Paul Rinaldi said in a statement.

Trump planned to meet with congressional leaders at 11 a.m. Saturday for more negotiations.

On Thursday and Friday, more than 4 million travelers nationwide were screened, Bilello said. To date, however, screening wait times remain well within TSA standards.

For security reasons, the agency does not release specific staffing numbers.
