Nishikori Routs Chardy To Return To Brisbane Final

Japan's Kei Nishikori overcame Daniil Medvedev in the Brisbane International final on Sunday (Jan 6) for his first ATP title in almost three years and the 12th of his career.

Nishikori got a near three-year-old monkey off his back with the defeat of Russia's Daniil Medvedev at Pat Rafter Arena, the title snapping a run of nine finals losses since his last tour win in February 2016.

Now Medvedev hit back, saving multiple break points in the early stages of the second set and breaking in the eighth game, 5-3.

The third set was all Pliskova as she broke Tsurenko twice to wrap up the final in two hours, 12 minutes.

"I expected something like this before the match - I'd seen him play a couple of times and I knew it would be tough", Tsonga said.

"I felt like in the second set I was a little bit, like waiting too much and I couldn't convert all the chances I had", the Russian said.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga's return to form continued on Friday as he beat home favourite Alex de Minaur to reach the semi-finals of the Brisbane International. "I served well, I returned well - I think that was the key today - and I was moving well, that was fantastic".

Going into the match, the pair were very evenly matched, at least on paper, having played each other twice before, both a year ago, with the results split evenly between the two of them.

In women's singles, Czech tennis star Karolina Pliskova battled past Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the final clash to clinch her second Brisbane International title.

Serving for the title at 5-4 Sunday, Tsurenko lost 13 straight points.

"Physically and tennis-wise I think it was ideal".

"Today's match; it was good tennis and I'm sure Daniil is going to be top 10 soon", Nishikori said after the Brisbane International final.
