Manafort Reportedly Passed Trump Campaign Data To Russian Oligarch

Judge Amy Berman Jackson, the federal judge overseeing Manafort's case in D.C., has ordered Mueller's team to submit its factual and evidentiary basis of Manafort's alleged lies by January 14.

The filing says Mueller has accused Manafort of lying to investigators about sharing the data with Konstantin Kilimnik, a business associate who was indicted a year ago on charges that he tampered with potential witnesses. The U.S. claims Kilimnik is linked to Russian intelligence, which is accused of leading the election interference effort in 2016, but he denies those ties.

Prosecutors working for special counsel Robert Mueller had contended in November that Paul Manafort, who headed Trump's campaign for several months in mid-2016, had told "multiple discernible lies" during 12 interview sessions after he had agreed to cooperate with the investigation.

In another faultily redacted portion, Manafort's attorneys revealed that an unnamed third party texted Manafort last May asking to use his name as a point of introduction if the person met with Trump.

Kilimnik has always been suspected to be central to Mueller's investigation into Russian influence in the 2016 presidential election.

Manafort's attorneys reported he has been suffering from severe gout, anxiety and depression - conditions that may have affected his ability to recall events during his tumultuous service on the Trump campaign.

What remains unknown is whether Trump or others on the campaign were aware that Manafort provided Kilimnik and Deripaska with polling data.

Defense lawyers say that even though they don't believe Manafort intentionally made false statements, they're not requesting a hearing on the government's allegations.

According to The Times, Manafort and Rick Gates, his former business partner and campaign deputy, provided the information in spring 2016, around the time Trump clinched the GOP nomination.

Manafort, 69, agreed to cooperate with Mueller when he admitted to two conspiracy counts in Washington on September 14, a month after jurors convicted him in Virginia of tax and bank fraud.

Manafort told a colleague in February - four months after he was indicted - that he was in contact with a senior administration official through that time, prosecutors said in accusing him of lying. Another question is whether Kilimnik here was functioning as an arm of Deripaska in his relationship with Manafort or as cutout for Russian intelligence-or, again, perhaps both. "This does not constitute outreach by Mr. Manafort to the President", a redacted line in the filing claims, while another redacted sentence says another identified interaction is "hearsay purportedly offered by an undisclosed third party".

Manafort, who earned millions of dollars for his political consulting work for Ukraine's former pro-Russia government, has emerged as a key figure in Mueller's investigation. That time could come in addition to his punishment for separate convictions in Virginia on tax and bank fraud charges.

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson had given Manafort's lawyers until Monday to make a decision. Manafort's filing sheds little light on that transaction.

Manafort faces a tentative March 5 sentencing date in his federal case in D.C. If he is found to have breached the deal, he would lose any sentencing credits for acceptance of responsibility, prosecutors said.

The defence team says Mr Mueller's team has indicated it will not pursue additional charges against Manafort.
