An estimated seven million Chinese tourists will head overseas over the Spring Festival this year, according to the official news agency Xinhua, citing numbers from Chinese travel agency Ctrip.

Firecrackers also worsen the country's notorious air pollution problems, and last year air quality across the country was recorded to have worsened on four days of the Lunar New Year holiday.

These temporary capacity reductions have been relatively successful.

Authorities expect there will be nearly three billion trips made during the so-called "Spring Festival", the 40-day period that started on January 21 and ends on March 1.

We're not surprised; the two sets here feature iconic traditions commonly seen during Lunar New Year celebrations, namely the dragon dance and families gathering around for reunion dinner.

One of the 12 animal zodiac signs related to the Chinese New Year, the pig is believed to be a symbol of optimism, enthusiasm and being hardworking.

"Peppa" will be making its Chinese debut one day earlier on the first day of the Year of the Pig.

Many rituals including spring-cleaning homes, decorating streets and hosting large family banquets on New Year's Eve are common practice. In China, millions of people watched the China Media Group Spring Festival Gala.

In mainland China, authorities were expecting a total of nearly three billion trips by vehicle, train and aeroplane in the 40 days surrounding the holiday.
