One Measles Case Confirmed In Denton County

The new measles cases in Houston bring the total number of cases in Texas to six so far in 2019.

The Houston outbreak comes as new cases of measles are being confirmed in Washington state on a daily basis, and other cases have been confirmed in Oregon, Georgia, and NY.

The one particulars in regards to the three contaminated people which were launched are that two are young boys below the age of 2 and the third is a lady between the ages of 25 and 35 years outdated.

All three cases are children who were not vaccinated or did not complete their vaccine series. The agency says worldwide travelers returning from Israel and Ukraine-where large outbreaks recently occurred-appear to be spreading the measles in the United States.

Measles is a highly contagious virus spread through direct contact or through the air.

Both the DSHS and the CDC recommend children get 1 dose of measles vaccine at 12-15 months of age, and then the 2nd dose at 4-6 years. Measles is so contagious that if one person has it, 90 percent of the people close to that person who are not yet immune could become infected.

Symptoms of measles include high fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes, followed up by flat red spots that appear on the face at the hairline and spread down throughout the body. Health officials say the shots are safe and effective, providing about 93 percent protection with one dose and 97 percent with two doses.

Until lab results are available, and in order to protect those who may have been exposed, Public Health is treating these suspect cases as we would treat confirmed cases and releasing information about public locations they visited while potentially contagious with measles.

In 2018, Texas had nine confirmed measles cases.

What's more, the latest update noted all confirmed cases matched a strain of the virus circulating in Eastern Europe.

Vaccination remains the most effective method for preventing measles, according to the Bell County Health District.
