Speaker Pelosi Revokes Mike Pence's House Office Space

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi spoke with the Washington Post today and said that Trump is unfit to be president, however, she says trying to impeach him would be too divisive. Nonetheless, in the weeks ahead, I suspect we will see all the wannabe Democratic nominees for president declare that Trump is an unfit, grotesque criminal who needs to be impeached.

"She is lowering expectations about the prospect of impeachment and reminding people of the gravity of that move and the impact it would have politically in dividing the country, ' Rep. Gerry Connelly of Virginia told CNN".

For the record, impeachment is political action, not a legal one, and the constitution's language is quite vague, leaving it up to congressional interpretation.

Numerous stories focused on insults the Speaker threw at President Trump during her interview with the Washington Post magazine. "And he's just not worth it", she said. "And that's up to us to make the contrast to show that this president - while he be appealing to you on your insecurity and therefore your xenophobia, whether it's globalization or immigrants - is fighting clean air for your children to breathe, clean water for them to drink, food safety, every good thing that we should be doing that people can't do for themselves". Pelosi forged messy consensus on a resolution condemning all forms of bigotry, in an area where Trumpian excesses (his racism and hate) roiled her conference, demanding an unusually ambitious response to one member's offenses.

Nancy Pelosi wants nothing more than for Donald Trump to be removed from office and have Democrats back in control to restore law, order and sanity to Washington, D.C., and the country, but there are many variables to weigh.

The politics of impeachment with the 2020 presidential election only a little more than 20 months away is far from the only issue involved in Pelosi's comments.

Pelosi isn't going to waste time on an impeachment proceeding that won't go anywhere unless public opinion changes dramatically.

Pelosi suggested that impeachment should not be pursued "unless there's something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan". "We are not governing with a focus on impeachment", Mr. Jeffries said. "I think we'll see".

"Speaker Pelosi and all members of leadership have always encouraged us to represent our districts, and this is something that was very important to my residents and still continues to be", she said Tuesday. "While I don't exclude that possibility, I don't think we should put the country through impeachment without that amount evidence".

None of which is to say that Pelosi does not intend to use her Democratic House majority to hold Trump accountable.

But Pelosi and other critics of impeachment rarely give the counterarguments enough consideration.

In the wide-ranging interview, Pelosi also said she believed Trump ended the longest ever shutdown in U.S. history earlier this year because of public sentiment. If that happens, however, Democrats would have the delightful choice of moving against Trump then or waiting to destroy him in the 2020 election after watching Republicans go after each other with tire irons.

Some in the left wing of the Democratic Party have been clamoring to begin impeachment proceedings.

"There's only a handful of Republicans that would do anything that is questionable of Trump even if he did the gun to the head of somebody on Fifth Avenue that he's talked about", Cohen told reporters Monday night.
