Top global travel hub Dubai bans Boeing 737 MAX

Earlier, the U.S. pilots already expressed their safety concerns about flying Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft as they complained that the jets' autopilot sometimes prompted them to nosedive and lose altitude.

"The pilot reported flight control problems and requested to turn back".

"We are working to rebook impacted customers as soon as possible but given the magnitude of our 737 Max operations, which on average carry 9,000 to 12,000 customers per day, customers can expect delays in rebooking and in reaching Air Canada call centres and we appreciate our customers' patience", the company said in a statement.

Lebanon's civil aviation authority said on Wednesday it has banned Boeing 737 MAX passenger jets from the country's airspace after a deadly plane crash in Ethiopia at the weekend.

"It's unfortunate, but we must put safety at the top of the agenda" he said, confirming that it affects domestic carriers including Air Canada, WestJet Airlines Ltd. and Sunwing, as well as global airlines.

A newly released photo shows one of the mangled black boxes from the doomed Ethiopian Airlines jet that crashed, killing 157 people on board.

The FAA said on Wednesday a software upgrade being worked on following the Lion Air crash would take months to complete.

"Regarding Boeing 737 Max 8 and Max 9 that had been in the news recently, there is no cause for alarm as there is no operator in Nigeria that is using that type of airplane". The carrier, a unit of Saudi Arabian Airlines, said it's waiting on the results of the investigation. The similarity is a warning sign for him and his agency, he said.

"And if it is confirmed that a particular problem say for instance, landing gear, they will issue an instruction to ground such plane worldwide until the problem is fix".

Air Canada plans to swap in other aircraft on flights to Hawaii, Martinique and Guadeloupe, reroute some passengers through different airlines and cancel other flights, including those from Halifax and St. John's to London, all of which comes at a cost. He said pilots have been given additional training and flight procedures on what they have to do if a similar situation occured.

The U.S.is increasingly alone in defending the American-made jets since the Federal Aviation Administration deemed the 737 Max to be "airworthy" earlier this week.

The 737 Max is Boeing's largest contributor of product revenue and earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT), according to Goldman Sachs Group Inc. analyst Noah Poponak.

John Gradek, who teaches airline-management courses at McGill University, said it was unprecedented for Canada to take a decision without the FAA moving first.
