Eugene students join global climate strike

Student strikes were inspired by 16-year-old Greta Thunberg, who began ditching school in August to sit in protest outside the Swedish parliament.

"If the politicians are just going to throw our futures away there's nothing we can do but be out here and say: we're not going to let you do that", 15-year-old Olivia Boddington told AAP at a climate strike in Canberra. In Europe, students packed streets and squares in London, Copenhagen, Rome, Vienna, Zurich and Lisbon.

Students take part in a "youth strike to act on climate change" demonstration in Paris, France, March 15, 2019.

The 16-year-old's activism has earned her a Nobel Peace Prize nomination.

Other protests have taken place on Fridays since, but today is the first major coordinated action.

About 100 students, carrying signs and tombstone-shaped placards, gathered on the steps of Manitoba's legislative building to hold a funeral for Earth Friday.

"As a whole, the adults of our generation have failed us", said sophomore Leah Ider to the crowd. Rachel Entin-Bell, an 8th grader at M.S. 839 in Kensington, Brooklyn, said that her frustration with older generations' inaction on climate change inspired her to join the movement.

Lana, 13, said: "They're messing up our future and we're the ones who are going to have to clean it up, so I think it's important that we come and tell them about it. We are striking because we want a future and we are going to carry on".

He says critics of the last march - some of whom labelled pupils missing lessons to take part as "truants" - has strengthened his resolve to campaign for a greener future.

"What would we do without it, honestly?", said Elkolaly.

The 2015 Paris climate conference pledge to keep the increase in global average temperatures to below 2 degrees Celsius (35 F) above pre-industrial levels requires a radical cutback in use of coal and fossil fuels.

Summerlin's speech was just one of many at the Morristown rally, which was attended by all ages, from toddlers in strollers, to gray-haired lifetime environmentalists. Saba was also helping pass around a petition for her fellow students to sign.

"There aren't many avenues through which we can get politicians to listen".

"The clock is ticking and time is against us!" they shouted.

The girls said they plan to take part in more climate events and try to live more sustainably. More than 10,000 marched through Lausanne, Switzerland, and thousands more through Zurich.

But some politicians praised the students.

- In South Africa's capital, Pretoria, one protester held a sign reading "You'll Miss The Rains Down in Africa". Thailand is one of the world's worst marine plastic polluters. The School Strike 4 Climate movement has spread to hundreds of countries and found a particularly strong response in the United States.

The group was later invited to meet officials at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in two weeks.

Kate De Groote, a high school senior who helped organize the Salt Lake event, spoke to the crowd about the need for all political parties to work together to address climate change, saying it is a human issue.

In Australia, Education Minister Dan Tehan said the strike was "not something that we should encourage".

And they're being considerably more vocal than our own Environment Minister Melissa Price, who has been pretty much MIA on the issue since she was appointed to the role a year ago.
