French investigators resume work on Ethiopian jet's black boxes

A screwlike device found in the wreckage of the Boeing 737 Max 8 that crashed last Sunday in Ethiopia indicates the plane was configured to dive, a piece of evidence that helped convince USA regulators to ground the model, a person familiar with the investigation said late Thursday night. "Air traffic control granted him permission to turn on the right because to the left is the city", he said.

A preliminary review of the device and how it was configured at the time of the crash indicated that it was set to push down the nose, according to the person, who wasn't authorized to speak publicly about the investigation.

Ethiopia and France signed a memorandum of understanding to formalize the technical work to be done on the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder on Friday. Europe's aviation safety regulator issued a continent-wide ban on flights of the aircraft model following similar actions by Australia, Singapore and Malaysia.

Ethiopian Airlines said an Ethiopian delegation led by its chief accident investigator had arrived there.

Identifying the remains of the 157 people killed in an Ethiopian Airlines plane crash may take up to six months, the airline said in a document seen by AFP on Saturday.

Boeing shares suffered more than 10 percent decline in the week when a wave of countries suspended the aerospace giant's 737 Max jets in the wake of the deadly crash in Ethiopia.

The plane's crash-proof recorders have been sent to France to be analyzed. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, Federal Aviation Administration and Boeing Co. are also taking part.

Boeing executives announced that they had paused delivery of the Max, although the company planned to continue building the jets while it weighs the effect of the grounding on production.

According to Boeing, the software being implemented includes updates to the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, the automated system created to keep the plane from stalling.

Flight simulation shows what it might have been like during the last seconds on the doomed Boeing jet that crashed in Africa.

"We did ferry our MAX aircraft to our Maintenance Bases which does include MCO", said a statement from Southwest Airlines. Engineers are making changes to the system created to prevent an aerodynamic stall if sensors detect that the jet's nose is pointed too high and its speed is too slow.

Investigators looking into the Indonesian crash are examining whether the software automatically pushed the plane's nose down repeatedly, and whether the Lion Air pilots knew how to solve that problem. All 189 aboard were killed in the crash that occurred shortly after takeoff.

The Max is the latest upgrade to the Boeing 737s.
